With a long history behind it, years of experience and thousands of users worldwide, Photoshop is, without a doubt, the industry standard when it comes to photo manipulation and graphic design. In fact, its popularity is so widespread that its name became a verb, much like Google. It is habitual to say that an image has been “photoshopped”, which in the urban dictionary means that it was edited or manipulated, no matter the image editor that was used.
Photoshop's popularity relies on its versatility and its impressive feature set, which meets the requirements of professional photographers and artists, advertising specialists and graphic designers. Amazing results can be achieved once Photoshop’s capabilities are mastered and explored to their highest potential.
Creativity and imagination are the only limits
Photoshop delivers a plethora of tools for image manipulation, while making no compromise on quality whatsoever. Its toolbox includes an overwhelming collection of image editing features both for raster images and vector graphics.
As expected with such a powerful and comprehensive application, it requires time, exercise, experimentation and practice to master, perhaps a significant amount of time spent watching tutorials and viewing usage examples to use at full potential. But once mastered, the rich graphics and the astounding images that can be obtained in Photoshop make it all worth it.
Give your photos a stunning, eye-catching look
Layer-based editing is at the core of Photoshop, allowing image creation and manipulation using multiple overlays. Masks, filters, shadows and various other effects can be added to a layer.
With smart auto-correction capabilities, HDR imaging, color management tools, tons of effects and animations, there is no editing task that Photoshop cannot carry out. It allows you to change picture backgrounds and fix imperfections, or use effects and colors to make a photo be much more eye-catching.
It is not just editing tools that you have at hand, but also various drawing tools that bring you close to the real experience of painting in watercolor, spray-painting on a wall and achieve effects that you might not thought can be obtained in the digital world. Moreover, neural filters allow you to color a scene with a few clicks, combine landscapes to create collages or a new scenery and change face expressions in your photos. And, if that is not enough, the application’s functionality can be further extended using new plugins available both inside the application and in Creative Cloud.
Presenting the Photoshop family
It is worth mentioning that the Photoshop family includes mobile tools that work together to provide a comprehensive and unmatched image manipulation suite. Photoshop Lightroom offers powerful image editing tools, Photoshop Express is the mobile Photoshop client that can be used on the go, while the Photoshop Camera is an app that allows capturing high-quality photos.
Needless to say, Photoshop seamlessly integrates with other of Adobe’s products, allowing you to import content from Illustrator, for instance.
The go-to image editing and manipulation software
Photoshop is the emblematic application when it comes to photo editing, managing to challenge your creativity and design skills, while providing the tools and the functionality needed to obtain incredible art and amazing graphics.
Thanks to its clever selection tools, its professional-grade editing toolbox and its team collaboration and sharing options, Photoshop’s recognition as the industry standard has, indeed, a solid foundation.
You can use Photoshop for free for editing pictures you’ve taken yourself, but it lacks certain features that commercial software has. Instead, you should be looking at the alternatives we discuss in the upcoming sections.
Paint.NET is a free, open source digital painting software application for image editing. It’s great for doodling and quick edits because you can work in layers, and it works well for photos that don’t need much adjusting or retouching.
Paint.NET has built-in pre-made brushes for creating works of art — and those brushes automatically update as you paint. The program also allows you to apply layers and masks in your image-editing projects, making it a great software option for beginners.
Paint.NET has a large community of users with its own forum. When you have questions, it’s best to post them in the community forum, which is the best way to keep up to date with the newest updates.
## Photo Editing Alternatives
Photoshop is the most well-known image-editing software program on the market and certainly the most common and best known image-editing program available. However, the availability of a good number of alternatives has made it much easier to find an image-editing solution for your image-editing needs. Most people with a decent degree of computer proficiency can use a free or inexpensive image-editing program such as Paint.NET or GIMP to create graphic design projects, but those who prefer to stay within the realm of computer power and experience will find that Photoshop has much to offer when it comes to fine tuning images.
Note: Most newer features in Photoshop will also be available in Photoshop Elements.
In this article, I’ll explain the core features of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. I’ll also show how to get started using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, what to consider when purchasing, and how to find new features and tools.
Learning to use Photoshop
Learning to use Photoshop Elements is nearly identical.
The only significant difference is in the window and workspace layout. You can download the trial version of Photoshop Elements from Adobe.

What’s in a Photoshop?
A number of core features are required for creating graphics:
Layouts, page sizes, and print setups: Most computer printers, small presses and web printers are limited to 8.5 x 11 and US Letter formats. Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements) lets you specify a grid or page size for your images (e.g. 4 x 6). This lets you specify the dimensions of your images for printing, web publishing, or other purposes. You can use either a 5-column by 2-row (5/2) grid or a 4-column by 2-row (4/2) grid.
The home page for Photoshop Elements lets you change the page size from the default 8.5 x 11 to Letter or A4, and then to custom. Photoshop Elements lets you set the Grid Image size to either 5/2 or 4/2, and then to custom.
Import tools: Photoshop and Photoshop Elements let you import graphics and images from most image formats and graphics applications on your computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Edit tools: Photoshop allows you to edit graphics using a variety of tools (see list below). Photoshop Elements is a limited version of Photoshop and allows you to edit your graphics using a subset of the features included in Photoshop.
Save graphics: You can save your images as JPEG, TIF, GIF or PNG. JPEG is the default save format for Photoshop Elements 10 and higher, while TIF, GIF and PNG are supported from Photoshop Elements 6 and 8. You can also save images as PNG-8 or PDF.
Print graphics: Photoshop allows you to print graphics directly from the application, or save an image for printing. Photoshop Elements allows you to save graphics for printing.
Audio, video: You can add audio, video, and special effects to your
The Behemoth Live Performance
In the cold of winter, I saw them many years ago, back in 1983, at a small festival in Southern England. The place was freezing cold, the wet was sucking through the bare branches of the trees, and the sound of howling gales and raging blizzards was ringing in everyone’s ears.
And the entire Festival was being held just a few miles from the spot where they all were born, and where all of them would die. The gathering was in a dusty small town in South Wales and when the band arrived I was a little too young to take any of the significance of the scene in at all.
It was their first UK appearance, and their first outing, and the vast size of the crowd swelled with every set. The band laid down a flawless and electrifying performance over the course of two nights – again, few people took notice or were aware of the significance of what they were witnessing in front of them. And as for me? I was doing my job – I was there to experience an act, any act. It was not until I had been working as a music journalist for nearly twenty years that the true impact of that day in Narrow Lane, Pontypridd, South Wales, returned to me, and I realised just how pivotal that moment was for me.
The final piece of the set was taken up by a backing singer, a more exotic and soulful selection, very unlike anything they’d delivered on their previous UK live appearances. This was their epicentre, the point of their return to the UK, and even though I was far too young to fully appreciate their significance, I would not have been able to identify it.
The final encore was a stripped down version of “Master Of Puppets”, and all those gathered in the cold night air sang along. One thing was abundantly clear, and it was the sound of the wind through the trees, howling through the clear night sky. And I knew then, in that moment, that the experience that they were delivering me was the real thing, it was the end of a long journey, and it was my road. And I knew then, that for a brief moment, it wasn’t just that, it was also a different time, a time when rock music was performing on those who loved it the most.
And so the first of two final encores rolled around. I wasn’
