If you’ve read any of my recent reviews, you’ll know I really enjoy books that are written by famous authors but you’ve never heard of. I love a good retelling of a well-known story. I think book retellings allow us to see the characters in a whole new light and add a bit of whimsy to your reading.

A few weeks ago I came across a book called Boompa written by D.J. Stewart, which was originally published in 2007. The story covers the period leading up to the first Chinese interment in the Dakota Territory on July 3, 1889, which is known as The Boompa Dance, and continues through the decision to halt the relocation of the Dakota from the summer of 1890 to a missionary compound in the fall.

Boompa was recommended to me by my friend and booktuber, but I must admit, I didn’t find it as engaging as he did. He seemed to enjoy the book a lot and was
